Oy vey!

Last month our family took our first trip to Disneyland. We had been advised to avoid the summer crowds and visit in the fall. Everyone said, “October is THE time to go. You’ll just walk right on the rides”. Well, let's just say the economy hasn’t affected Disney in the least. Just see for yourself how quiet it was during a recession in October:

It was insane! I had been there just a few months earlier during peak summer season and it wasn’t near this busy. Really! The only explanation Disney cast members could come up with was Rosh Hashana. I don’t mean to kvetch, but who knew it was kosher to celebrate the Jewish New Year at Disnelyand? Now we know and so do you. Our advice? Don’t be meshugge and vacation at Disneyland during Rosh Hashana or any Jewish holiday for that matter. In fact, we suggest you don’t try to visit during any sort of presumed holiday, like administrative assistants’ day or ozone awareness day. Just the thought of it makes us shpilkes!

In spite of the crowd, the kids had a magnificent time. That is until they came in contact with foliage they didn’t recognize. Disneyland is meticulously landscaped--and it should be. After all it IS the happiest place on earth. So we found it amusing the kids kept asking if these unfamiliar plants were poison ivy. (Like Mickey would seriously plant rash inducing plants within arms reach of his littlest guests.) It was such a concern; you’d think they had heard it was the scratchiest place on earth!

Thankfully, the kids weren’t as wary about fast rides. We were so pleased they rode almost everything. I even convinced The Squire to try my favorite, California Screamin’. When it was over, he turned to me and said the words every roller coaster lovin’ mamma longs to hear…

“Let’s do it again!”

I tell ya, that moment was like buttah! (insert Linda Richman pucker here) Excuse me--I’m getting a little verklempt.

  1. Looks like the kids had a good time. Did they love the Star wars fighting show? Mine loved that one the best. Fun pictures. :)

  2. Rachelle, the planets were all in alignment and I visualized success and I said a tiny prayer and as a result BOTH kids were chosen for the Jedi Academy the FIRST time we tried. They loved it! Suggestion: Tell your kids to just walk out there even if they aren't chosen. Happened during ours and they just let it go. Worth a shot.

  3. Sounds like you had a great time! I can't believe it was that busy. We've always gone over on October break and it has always been great. My kiddos are sooo jealous that your kiddos got to do the jedi training. Each time we've been there we have tried several different showings to get picked, but it hasn't happened :( We'll have to try your suggestion next time.

  4. Oh, one more thing...

Wear your lucky nail polish and don't forget to cross your fingers AND toes. I'm convinced that helped.
