Married to MacGyver

Triskaidekaphobia. That’s the only vocabulary word I remember from 10th grade English class. It’s an irrational fear of the number 13. Triskaidekaphobia is so wide spread, many tall buildings don’t have a 13th floor. The elevator buttons in these buildings simply skip from 12 to 14. Thankfully, I don’t suffer from this malady. It’s probably a good thing too, as I’m in my 13th year of marriage. Over these 13 years, I’ve learned many things about my husband. For one thing, Sir William turns his clothes right side out before putting them in the laundry. He can detail a car like nobody’s business. The man vacuums the carpet like a professional. He has many, many great qualities. The one though, that never stops amazing me is his innate ability to fix literally anything. He has the mind of an engineer and the heart of a social worker. Put them together and it’s like being married to MacGyver! A few cable ties, a Swiss Army knife and voila—problem solved. Between his skills and my compulsion to rescue dilapidated furniture abandoned on the roadside, we’ve basically decorated our home with refurbished trash. I wouldn’t exactly call it Pottery Barn—our decor is more like Terracotta Shed, but we love it. In addition, I have watched him install electrical outlets with a wire hanger, reroute cable lines behind crown molding and build furniture out of scraps of wood. To further illustrate his ability, I was recently lamenting about the tangle of computer cords under our desk. (Yes, we still use a desktop. I know! We’re practically Amish.) Cord clutter makes me crazy. So within minutes, we went

from THIS:

to THIS:
I don’t know if Sir William used dental floss or paperclips or what, but just look at it!!! The power strip is actually attached to the underside of the desk. Like the 13th floor in a tall building, all those yucky cords have disappeared.

Which has me thinking…

I’ll bet Sir William could even cure triskaidekaphobia with something as simple as a stick of gum and a shoe lace.

Just Pining Away

AHHHH! It’s that time of year. Can you smell the crisp woodsy scent of freshly cut pine? No, I’m not talking about the Christmas tree still standing in all its’ decorated splendor in our living room. We are completely aware it’s been two and a half weeks since Christmas, but we have PrIoRiTiEs! No time to take down the holiday décor when the Pinewood Derby is just 12 days away. Oh, and this isn’t just ANY race. This is the LAST Derby of The Squire’s cub scouting career. In every race, he’s always come in 1st place and he’s hoping to maintain his undefeated title this year. Chances are good The Squire will accomplish his goal as he is studying under the Yoda of Pinewood Derby. That’s right, as one of the most legendary and skilled Derby Masters in galactic history, Sir William has trained the young Squire in the ways of Derby champions. These two are terribly serious about the contest. So much, that last year I was actually accused of aiding the competition. Yes, I had the audacity to allow a neighbor to weigh their car on our scale! Who would've thought owning a scale that weighs in grams was classified information? Since then, I have been sworn to secrecy. No tricks of the trade may be shared at any cost. Though I might consider leaking something to the first person that offers to take down our Christmas decorations. Anyone?

A Pint's a Pound the World Around

I’ve heard it said: A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. Statistics show resolutions generally fail because they’re not realistic. Sort of like the preposterous notion that we’ll actually eliminate all fats from our diet. Who are we kidding? Give up cheesecake and pizza? Forever? That’s like giving up blinking! I have learned however, that weight loss can be achieved one little pound at a time. Over the past year, I thought I’d learned all the ways one can lose excess body weight. Today, I discovered one more...give blood.

I’m an advocate for organ donation. When I don’t need the parts anymore, why not give ‘em to someone who does? But, I have never EVER had the desire to donate anything while still living. That is, until Sir William pestered me into it. You see he donates every chance he gets. Loves it! Strange, I know. He especially likes to come home from his Red Cross appointment and announce that he’s supposed to have a “hearty meal” (like I should be standing there with a steak in hand). Honestly, I know I can’t be one upped by a silly boy who won’t ride roller coasters and has never given birth. But a dare is a dare, so I went. When I told the tech it was my first time, he responded: “Was it everything you had hoped for?”

Oh, it was everything I had hoped for – AND MORE!

I was already giddy from knowing in less than 15 minutes they had sucked a pound out of my arm; but as I began to leave, I got another bonus. They prescribed plenty of rest and relaxation. Yessirree! No strenuous work for a day or two. My New Year’s resolution for 2009:

Give blood--as often as possible.

Santa ROCKS!

Turns out an Elf actually was making Lady May and her brother a Nintendo DS for Christmas. "Santa ROCKS!" is all we've heard for the last 24 hours. Considering the kids were up before 5am on Christmas morning, we agree...

Santa really DOES rock (and is very, very sleepy right about now).
