Can you guess from the speedometer where we went last weekend? We heard they don’t really care if you obey the speed limits in Mexico so Sir William fulfilled a dream. Just kidding! The car was programmed for kilometers people! We didn’t know if they enforce the big red octagon ALTO signs either. We did run few of those just to see what would happen (at least that was Sir William’s excuse). Other than my blood pressure rising, nothing happened. Well, I can’t say
nothing happened. I did discover on the trip south that Sir William’s other woman is bilingual. Oops! Did I say too much? Well, since the cat is out of the bag let me tell you about Sara--his Blackberry. Yes, she has a name. I got tired of calling her “that thing” (as in “put that thing away” or “that thing is ringing again”). So I named her. Sara and Sir William have a great relationship, and why wouldn’t they? They spend a lot of time together, she’s always there for him with helpful information and she requires nothing in return. So on top of all this perfection, to discover she provides driving directions in flawless Spanish is just about more than I can take. He asks me to navigate and we wind up lost
and in an argument. He asks her for directions and she calmly advises in a foreign language! I can’t compete and I’m starting to get a complex.
Turns out our kids are bilingual too. A few minutes into our journey, they were 90% sure we were in Mexico as we passed a subdivision called Rancho El Diablo. “We’re seeing a lot of Spanish words”, they said. In their minds it could only mean one thing--we’d crossed the border. The only reason they weren’t totally convinced was the complete absence of Chihuahuas around. I'm tellin' ya, Disney has American children brainwashed.
It was the very moment I reached my limit of hearing “Are we there yet?” that we rounded a bend to sweeping views of the Sea of Cortez. The sun was setting in strokes of coral and lavender. All anxiety that our children’s cultural education had been left to talking dogs melted away. The following three days at the beach house were heaven. Cool ocean breezes, warm seawater, drifting into peaceful slumber drunken by the sound of lapping waves, awakening to an endless vista of blue water, all commanded my nerves to ALTO! My soul understood.
Did you hear that Sara? Looks like I’m bilingual after all!
How funny! Sir Williams youngest brother has that same problem with his "Sara" must run in the family.LOL!! Looks like you had a lot of fun in Mexico, wish we would have been able to make it ;)
ReplyDeleteI showed B your birthday comment and question this morning and she thought it was sooo cool! So...she has dance after school today so we did some celebrating yesterday. They had an early release day so we took her to see High School Musical 3, got her a pedicure, and then to dinner! Thanks for the gift she loved, loved, loved, it!!
haha for the first few lines i thought "Sir William" was Bill hahah. o my, i am so jealous of your trip. I am glad you could go and embrace my love for Mexico in Oct. I am convinced it really truly is the best time of year to go. We were dumb and forgot that we still haven't gotten Rubis birth certificate so we didnt make it. As far as "vending" goes I am going to be doing vinyl so if you need any for the holidays or just because stop on by or just let me know.
ReplyDeleteStephanie, you are quite poetic in your wording. Your and your stories crack me up, I was totally LOL!! You will have to check out Natalie Kennedy's blog, her's is always good for a laugh. Fun pics at the beach too.
